Ogburn Stables own Amy Kosloske earns Girl Scout Gold Award

February 1, 2010

Amy Kosloske, a member of Senior Girl Scout Troop 1101, has earned the Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest award in Girl Scouting.

The Girl Scout Gold Award is earned by fulfilling requirements that recognize a senior Girl Scout’s commitment to excellence as she develops leadership skills and personal values to meet life’s present and future challenges.

To earn the Gold Award, Amy designed and carried out a plan of activities, including service to the community, career exploration, specialized-interest projects, and completing a Girl Scout Challenge. For her project, she created and implemented a farm-themed sensory horseback riding trail for disabled children at River Therapeutic Riding Center in Tobaccoville.

Amy has been a Girl Scout for 13 years. She is a senior at Mt. Tabor High School. Her school and community activities include the Tabor Girls Council, and she is a member of Youth Grantmakers in Action of The Winston-Salem Foundation.

Her other honors and awards include the Girl Scout Silver Award, the Tim Duncan Character Award, and serving as a junior marshal for Mt. Tabor’s graduation ceremony. She is currently a finalist for the NC State University Park Scholarship.

Amy is the daughter of Daryl and Hilary Kosloske of Winston-Salem.

Ogburn Stables Chartered Horseback Trail Riding to Yadkin Islands, NC

January 23, 2010

On Saturday, January 23, 2010, twelve riders took the first Winter trip of 2010. Two trailers, eleven horses, one mule and twelve riders headed out for a day of riding in the Yadkin Islands/Horne Creek area. Since it had rained the previous day we decided on trails where there were no rivers to cross.

The weather was iffy when we boarded and left the stables but upon arriving at our destination the skies turned blue and the weather warmed. We met a couple of riders and joggers on the trail but for the most part we had the area to ourselves. Our newest member, Cookie the mule, did a wonderful job. You will be able to see her picture in the gallery.

We arrived back at the stables around 2:00 pm. My thanks go out to Chris and Ltl David for doing the hauling and to Dan Craver for additional pictures. I am still learning how to take pictures on a moving horse especially one who does not want to stand still while I try to focus or thinks the camera is something to eat.

It was a wonderful day!

Ogburn Stables Christmas Party 2009

December 4, 2009

The Ogburn Stables Christmas Party was held on Friday night, December 4, 2009 at the Texas Land and Cattle Steak House. We had a beautiful room to celebrate the season. Everyone was in a festive mood and enjoyed reminiscing about what a good year it was for Ogburn Stables and the people who board their horses there. We also had family members and friends of the boarders. The food could not have been better as each person was able to choose what they wanted from the menu. From steaks, ribs, salads, you name it, everyone was able to pick their favorite dish.

During our meal David started the Secret Santa. The people who participated drew numbers for the gifts. Some were cute but most were funny. We all had good laughs. Hilary Kosloske spoke of the family that was being sponsored for this Christmas 2009 and what was needed. On Friday night, December 18, the family will be treated to a special Christmas at the stables.

There were two beautiful door prizes given out. The first was a beautiful hand carved mirror made by David Ogburn. The winner of that was Claudia’s and Piper’s dad Gary. The second prize was a pair of bull horns (also made by David) that could be mounted on the wall. The winner of this was Michelle Hare.

Our festivities broke up around 9:00 P.M. All left with big smiles on their faces from a wonderful evening.

Chartered Horseback Trail Ride to Blowing Rock, NC

November 21, 2009

Eight of us left Ogburn Stables around 9:30 A.M. on Saturday, November 21 for a late fall chartered horseback trail riding trip to Beautiful Blowing Rock in the North Carolina mountains. Despite a forecast of clouds the weather could not have been better with clear blue skies which made for a comfortable sunny day with wonderful views of the mountains and lakes. The higher we climbed the more beautiful the scenery was. We arrived back at the trailer around 5:30 P.M. and loaded our horses for the trip home. The sun had gone down and it started to get pretty cold. On the way back we stopped at Peddler’s Steak House in Boone for a wonderful meal and talked about our time on the trail and what everyone had planned for Thanksgiving. We arrived safely home at 10:00 P.M. with eight hungry horses waiting for their late supper.

Our thanks go out to Chris and David for hauling our precious cargo of horses safely to our destinations.

Ogburn Family and Friends Fall Fling

October 12, 2009

The Annual Ogburn Family and Friends Fall Fling Picnic was held on October 10, 2009.  A big thank you goes out to Lil David for the brisket and BBQ that he prepared for all the guests.  It was Scrumptious! There was a wonderful turn out for our picnic, the weather cooperated, and all ate their fill of all the food prepared by our guests.  Needless to say no one went home hungry.  The highlight of the evening was when Rebecca (Lil David's wife) got top of a bright yellow wheel barrow, got inside and proceeded to slide down the large hill overlooking the picnic shelter!  Of course, all the children had to try their hand at this activity.

It was great to connect with old friends, greet new faces, and welcome them into the fold.

Chartered Horseback Trail Ride to Blowing Rock, NC

July 11, 2009

Ogburn Stables planned a group excursion to Blowing Rock, North Carolina for a day of riding and a refreshing escape.  Blowing Rock is a quaint little town that can capture your heart.  7 of us and our horses rode the Moses Cone park trail around Bass Lake, to the Manor House, to the tower part of the way to Rich Mountain.  The trails were bordered in full bloom b the beautiful pink mountain laurel.  It was a beautiful sight to behold.  On our way back to the trailer, it poured and we were all soaked and cold!  But, however miserable we all were from being wet, nothing could spoil our fabulous trail ride.  We are looking forward to our next ride in September.  Anyone interested, please call for details and to sign up.  We would love to have you join us.  - Happy Trails!

July 1, 2009

Both of our 2009 Summer Junior Dude Ranch Day Camps were a great success.  We'd like to extend a big thanks to all of the junior and senior counselors, to Mrs. Pat Baker & Ginger, who was the best show & tell and too all the other volunteers who contributed a helping hand.  The kids were quick learners and their horse knowledge and abilities grew in leaps and bounds.  Friday's were for our weekly show and awards with many parents joining to see their children in action.  We all look forward to Ogburn Stables Junior Dude Ranch Day Camps next year and hope to get the privilege of helping young cowgirls and cowboys fulfill their dreams once again.  - Happy Trails!
